EXTERNSHIP IS THE FIRST STEP IN BECOMING A CERTIFIED EFT THERAPIST.
The EFT Externship is the introductory 28-hour training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and also the pre-requisite for other EFT trainings and to become a certified EFT Therapist. With an emphasis on the application for couple therapy, this training includes an overview of the entire model including steps and stages, the Tango, interventions, adult attachment theory, and the important role of emotion in love relationships. The Externship is recommended for all types of mental health clinicians who counsel or want to counsel couples.
Through a combination of lecture, videotape, observation of live interviews and exercises, participants will learn the basic concepts and theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy, identify the stages and steps of treatment, begin to formulate problematic cycles of interaction, and help couples end cycles of blame and disengagement so that they can restore and deepen the emotional bond between them. Sue Johnson's third edition of The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy: Creating Connections (Routledge, 2020) is the basic text of EFT and recommended reading for all participants of the Externship. To practice this experiential model, experienced EFT therapists and supervisors will be available to assist small group learning and role play practice. The Externship is the pre-requisite for Core Skills, Master classes and Special Topics training in EFT.
